Humane Dog Boarding with Training
Located in Hydes, Maryland
Whether you have a puppy who needs socialization and foundation work, a naughty adolescent who needs to brush up on their manners, or a newly adopted adult dog who needs basic skills, Adventure Dogs Academy will create a boarding with training plan to fit your needs.
Packages are based upon age and length of stay. Puppy packages are for dogs 6 months and younger; manners packages are for 7 months and older. Each package includes two 45-minute in-person transfer lessons and two hours of virtual training, notes and videos detailing how to continue the work at home, and unlimited email support for 6 months following the end of the stay.
In-person lessons are either at your home or an agreed-upon location if you’re outside of our service area. Virtual lessons are held via Google Meet or FaceTime. All follow ups must occur within six months of their stay.
If a shorter stay is requested, a la carte pricing is $180/day and includes notes with video links and ways to practice at home. Please note, this does not include transfer sessions.
All BWT dogs enjoy access to a huge fenced yard, play with other dogs (if appropriate), and a swimming pool in the summer months.
FAQs
Is my dog a good fit for boarding at Adventure Dogs Academy?
How do I know if my dog will be a good fit?
Board and train is not for everyone, despite what some trainers advertise. During our intake call, we will determine whether this program is right for you. A scheduled acclimation stay for one or two nights will ensure they’re comfortable with our setup.
What tools do you use?
We primarily use treats and toys as rewards for behavior, as well as attention and praise. Long lines are used when practicing in new locations or proofing off leash and distance behaviors. We typically recommend front clip harnesses for help with loose leash walking. For XL breeds who pull a lot, we may recommend a head halter. We will never use a prong collar, shock collar, or leash corrections of any kind. We will never hurt or scare your dog to achieve desired behaviors.
Where does my dog sleep?
Dogs sleep in a large, comfortable kennel (or a crate within the kennel, if they prefer) with a kuranda bed and blanket / bed from home. Young puppies may be crated in the house with us.
When does training occur?
Training occurs every time your dog is out with us, which means they’re working every 2-3 hours.
How will I know what my dog is working on?
You will receive daily updates via email or text with videos and pictures summarizing their sessions. You can reach out as frequently as you’d like – we understand how difficult it can be to leave your dog with someone else!
Do you offer a guarantee?
Short answer:
No.
Long answer:
It is unethical for any professional to guarantee a dog’s behavior after boarding with training, due to the many, many variables involved in maintaining their new skills. These variables include management of the environment (does the dog have access to continue rehearsing “bad” behavior like counter-surfing or jumping on guests?), owner commitment, and consistency in training at home. That said, we offer a lot of support to guide you once you get your dog home, including in-person and virtual lessons, and unlimited email access for six months following the end of the program.
